Formula 1 driver Liam Lawson revealed he came dangerously close to a potentially fatal incident during Sunday's Mexico City Grand Prix when two safety personnel darted across the track immediately ahead of his car

The alarming incident happened on the third circuit when track officials were seen on the circuit as Lawson was returning to the race following an quick visit to the pits to replace his damaged front wing

Competitor's Live Reaction

Moments later, the team's competitor Lawson communicated to his race engineer saying: "Is this for real? Did you witness that? I might have... taken their lives"

"I genuinely couldn't process what I was seeing"

"I came out on a brand new hard tyres, and then I arrived at Turn One and suddenly there were two guys sprinting across the track"

"I almost collided with one of them, honestly, it was so dangerous"

Security Issues Highlighted

"Obviously there's been a miscommunication at some point but I've never encountered that before, and I haven't previously witnessed that in the past. It's pretty unacceptable"

"We cannot comprehend how on a live track track officials can be permitted to just sprint across the track like that. I have no idea why, I'm sure we'll get some form of reasoning, but this absolutely cannot recur"

Formal Inquiry in Progress

The sport's regulatory authority, the International Automobile Federation (FIA), is thoroughly reviewing the circumstances

"Following a turn one incident, the race directors was informed that debris was present on the track at the apex of that corner" commented the FIA

"During the third lap, track officials were informed and placed on standby to access the circuit and recover the debris once all cars had passed"

"The moment it was realized that Lawson had pitted, the instructions to dispatch officials were rescinded and a double yellow flag was displayed in that section"

"Our inquiry continues what transpired subsequent to that time"
