Royal Air Force Typhoon jets have joined forces with France's air force in a joint strike against an underground arms cache in Syria used by the Daesh militant organization, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The site, located using reconnaissance, was assessed as housing weapons and explosive materials, the release indicated, and was situated in hills just above the historic site of Palmyra in the heart of Syria.

"The RAF jets employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a several access tunnels providing entry to the site... initial indications suggest the strike was effective," the MoD said.

There was no indication of any civilian impact in the strike late on Saturday and each participating jet made a safe return, the defence officials confirmed.

The Typhoon FGR4s were supported by a Voyager tanker plane.

The Islamic State group - also known as the so-called Islamic State - imposed jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike underscores our UK leadership, and resolve to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the Middle East," UK Defence Secretary the minister stated.

UK warplanes have carried out surveillance missions over Syria to "prevent any efforts to regroup" of IS after its routing at the battle of Baghuz in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of the UK armed forces involved in this mission for their professionalism and their bravery," Healey added. "They were part of numerous UK service members on duty over the holidays. This action, to remove terrorist threats who threaten our way of life, shows how UK forces are always on standby, continuously, ensuring Britain's security at home and influential overseas."

During December, the American forces carried out what it described as a "large-scale strike" on Daesh sites in Syria, subsequent to an ambush killed two US troops and a civilian interpreter in Palmyra.

The United Nations says Daesh still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 militants in Syria and Iraq.
