Seven accused members of Germany's far-left organization stand trial over multiple violent incidents

A group of seven people accused of being the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on this week, accused for violent actions against far-right activists that resulted in the nickname “Hammer Gang”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Recently, the United States designated the organization as a terrorist group along with multiple additional European far-left and anarchist groups.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting sites in the country and Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Among the incidents is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in Thuringia, whose venue was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Some suspects are allegedly accused of using hammers against presumed rightwing extremists, leaving some with serious injuries.

Court proceedings and cross-border allegations

Court proceedings involving six men and one woman is expected to run until July 2026 in the eastern city of Dresden. A pair of suspects, named as Johann G. and Paul M, are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during February 2023, around an annual event known as the “day of honor” that draws rightwing extremists from across Europe.

In a related case, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in the Hungarian judicial system for multiple charges of attempted assault against neo-Nazis prior to the same rally in 2023.

Historical background and group hierarchy

Eastern Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigration youth organizations, as well as the frequently radical anti-fascist networks that oppose them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a high-ranking member within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is alleged to have arranged training sessions where radical left activists practised combat techniques and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, concealment items and mobile phones.

Prior legal cases and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the group, Lina E., became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her 2023 guilty verdict for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

The US designation makes group members barred from entering the US, blocks financial holdings they could possess within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the American move and called on the government in Berlin to take similar action. However, the German foreign ministry simply stated it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The danger posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and most aggressive participants have either already been convicted or are in custody.”
