The Year 2026 Declared the Era of the Amphibian Adventure.
Although I thoroughly enjoyed the recent developer-focused presentation was a delight to watch, my biggest takeaway was perhaps unexpected: I am declaring that 2026 will be the peak period for frogs in video games.
A surprising total of five of the showcased games—Frog Sqwad, Stretchmancer, Unshine Arcade, Awaysis, and Big Hops—prominently include these hoppy characters. Given that a band of frogs is known as an army, it seems they are staking their claim.
The Enduring Appeal of Amphibians
Croaking characters are anything but new to the interactive entertainment. From the arcade classic Frogger to the coveted froggy chair in Animal Crossing, they have enjoyed a niche presence. But, their popularity has seemingly increased in recent times.
A quick search for "frog game" on Steam reveals an absolute deluge of results. Granted, some of these are obscure titles, a significant portion are legitimate titles centered on frogs.
A Data-Driven Dive
To understand this phenomenon, I performed a deep dive into the past five years of amphibian-themed gaming on Steam. My approach was somewhat arbitrary, focusing on games with frogs in the title or clearly visible in screenshots.
The results tell a compelling story: a steady increase from under 20 titles in 2020 to close to 60 in 2025.
This notable escalation prompts the question: why the sudden leap? The frog's elevated place in the public consciousness is somewhat apparent elsewhere, like the popularity of Frog and Toad as beloved characters. However, the trend in gaming appears particularly strong.
Why Frogs? The Game Design Advantage
In my opinion, this is a shift I can get behind. Frogs have natural design advantages for game developers.
- Unique Characters: They are ideally shaped to be designed as endearing characters that frequently end up as a fan favorite in any game.
- Dynamic Mechanics: Their long tongues and sticky tongues facilitate a myriad of unique mechanics.
Several the showcased games directly leverage these traits. For instance the tongue-swinging in Big Hops and the extra-long limb puzzles of Stretchmancer.
On the Cusp of a Croaking Renaissance
So, what can we expect in 2026? With five frog games confirmed for release before the year has even started—and the possibility for more—the trajectory is clear for it to be the largest year so far.
If these games find success—and based on past trends, games from this showcase have a strong track record—we may indeed be witnessing a full-blown frog gaming renaissance.
