Youth Discovered Dead After Untrue Allegations of Stealing Cremated Remains
One 14-year-old youth was discovered deceased only a few days after being falsely accused of taking the ashes of a deceased infant during a burglary, a coroner's inquiry has heard.
Heartbreaking Discovery
Kai Lloyd's mother and father found his body in his room at his Flintshire home on November 19th, 2021.
Untrue Allegations Begin
The investigation heard how his mother got a message on 8 November 2021 via online platforms, from a individual asking if her son was her child. The message stated: "Inform him appreciation for breaking into my flat."
In a statement presented to the proceedings, Lisa Lloyd said the woman had been in the media, claiming her baby's ashes had been stolen in a burglary - a claim which was untrue.
Police Investigation
An investigation report from authorities later concluded the alleged burglary complainant had "provided false information" and "evidence shows that said property was not taken in the first place".
News coverage about the alleged stolen remains attracted social media responses, and although Kai was not identified in the posts, his mother said people "knew it was him".
The "social media content were really upsetting", she said.
Emotional Health Effect
She explained that Kai had been identified with mild ADHD, and as part of that condition, other individuals' opinions genuinely were important to him.
"It would have affected him severely," she commented, "particularly when this was not true".
Kai was detained at home, but no evidence was found. He was taken to a law enforcement facility and later released pending further inquiry.
Authorities said they would be in contact, the hearing learned, but had failed to contacted the relatives by the moment of his passing.
Isolation and Anxiety
His parent said Kai "became isolated" after the detention and "repeatedly inquired me whether I had received anything from the authorities", because his condition meant sometimes "a minute could feel like days".
When she spoke to him about the supposed burglary, she said her son told her he had gone into the house because the woman who lived there had said he could use the bathroom anytime he needed, but denied taking anything.
Digital Harassment
In a joint statement between her and her spouse, the mother said her child was being bullied online after the accusations.
The inquest heard that a young adult urged the teenager to end his life.
She had no worries on the night before he passed away, explaining how she had heard him "chuckling and teasing".
She described him as a "compassionate, loving" boy, and said her "relatives is completely devastated".
He had been "obviously hiding his concerns", she stated, adding that he could not stand to have anyone "have negative thoughts of him".
Educational Reaction
The inquest heard from school personnel at the local High School.
On 8 November, she "overheard some students discussing that the student had been arrested and that was the initial I heard".
"He told me... he'd was innocent," she continued.
After the discussion, the staff member said she rang Kai's parents' telephone and left a voicemail saying she had spoken to Kai about the allegations.
The court learned his parents said they never got that message.
Official Finding
Lead investigator told the hearing he would await documents regarding what enhancements had been made to dealing with suspects with the condition, before determining whether he should make a avoidance of subsequent fatalities report.
Delivering a narrative finding, he said: "Around 8 November 2021, unsubstantiated accusations were made against the teenager, a 14-year-old individual.
"Likely falsehoods were subsequently embellished and exaggerated through the medium of online networks.
"On November 11th, he was interviewed by the authorities and after his interview he was freed whilst investigations proceeded."
The official determined: "There is no evidence that the actions or failures of any organization caused or added to his passing and although it was the outcome of a self-inflicted act it is not possible to discern his intent."
